Wiltshire Police now has a new non emergency number – 101

The 101 number is being introduced nationally in phases and on 19 September

it was launched across forces in the South West, including Wiltshire.

Although 999 is a well recognised number to report emergencies, the 2010

British Crime Survey found that only half of the public knew which number to

call if they wanted to speak to their local police about policing,

non-urgent crime and anti-social behaviour.

Wiltshire Police’s Head of Contact Management, Chief Inspector Charlie

Armstrong, said: “Changing our non emergency contact number to 101 makes

it much easier for people to contact us. It is easy to remember and will be

used by all forces across the country by the beginning of 2012.

“We are constantly looking for ways to build on and improve our service to

the public and this change is a positive one that we are confident will be

welcomed by our communities.”

Wiltshire Police Authority Chairman, Christopher Hoare, said: “The

introduction of 101 provides the public of Wiltshire and Swindon with an

Parish council meeting - items of interest

Some notes from the St Mary Parish Council meeting on 9 March 2011, kindly provided by Peter Duffield:

1.    There has recently been a major increase in burglaries in the Donheads.   There have been break-ins to houses, garages and sheds, usually in the middle of the night.  As you probably know Police resources in the Tisbury area are very limited, one Constable and one Support Officer.   However, the response to a 999 call will be to send the nearest police car.   As a result of good liaison between Wiltshire and Dorset, the response may be from Dorset.   As an alternative, it could be an ‘armed response team’, as there are a number of these about protecting VIPs in the area.

2.      Wiltshire claims to have quick response to filling in potholes.   To get action, potholes should be reported to ‘Clarence’.

3.      There will be no rise in Council Tax this year or next and possibly for the next four years.   Wiltshire has taken money on the Central Government scheme to keep the tax down.

Temporary road closure

From Wiltshire Council:

I write to inform you of minor road works on the C62 to the south of Semley (See attached plan).

The works will include vegetation works, improvements to the existing drainage, installation of short lengths of new kerbing and resurfacing of the carriageway.

These works are programmed to start on Monday 9th August 2010 and last for 5 days under temporary road closure.

Please see the attached plan for the signed diversion route. It is anticipated that local residents may use an alternative route.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause.

I trust you will find the above useful and should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me on 01225 756600.

Community Area Highway Information

The Community Area highway information for your area will be available on the council’s website from 6th April.  It includes lists of the proposed highway and related works for 2010/11 with facts and figures about the roads in your area.  They will be in electronic format this year as we are trying to reduce the amount of paper sent out to the parish councils but they can be provided in printed form if required.

Changes in local Government

This year sees the end of Salisbury District Council.  As part of the restructuring of Local Government Wiltshire is creating "Area Boards"

Transport

Trains

Donhead St Mary is served by South West Trains from either Gillingham Station (8 miles) or Tisbury (6 miles). Trains run to London Waterloo or Yeovil/Exeter approximately hourly during the day on weekdays and Sundays. Not all trains stop at Tisbury, but the Tisbury Rail Users Group is active in ensuring that SW Trains take account of local requirements. Connections to several other routes can be made at Salisbury, and a Railair coach link to Heathrow Airport is available at Woking.

Car Parking facilities are inadequate at both Tisbury and Salisbury stations.

Buses

National Express run one daily service from Shaftesbury to London and return. Tickets are available from Shaftesbury Tourist Information Centre.

Wilts and Dorset buses run between Gillingham and Salisbury along the A30 through Charlton and Ludwell. Few go direct to Salisbury; some go via Donhead St Andrew and Tisbury but most via the Chalke Valley, so journey times vary from 50 mins to 1 hr 8 mins.  Buses run approximately once/hour from 0728 to 1615. On Tuesdays (Salisbury Market Day) an additional bus run by Shaftesbury & District Motor Services runs direct to Salisbury am returning pm, taking 40 mins each way.
